Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has emphasized the government's commitment to accelerating development in northern and Northeastern Kenya through several large-scale projects.
These initiatives, valued at Ksh. 300 billion are part of the North and North Eastern Development Initiative (NEDI), which aims to drive socio-economic transformation in the region.
The Deputy President highlighted that the government, in partnership with the World Bank and other stakeholders, is implementing various projects at different stages.
The government addresses the region’s long-standing underdevelopment, leveraging its untapped potential.
Gachagua underscored the importance of infrastructure improvements such as roads, water supply, energy, and education, which are critical to unlocking the region's economic potential. He expressed optimism that, with proper utilization, the area could significantly contribute to Kenya's food security.
Among the notable NEDI projects are the Horn of Africa Gateway Project (HoAGP), a 740 km road from Isiolo to Mandera, the Isiolo Export Abattoir, and the rehabilitation of the Wajir Livestock Training Institute. Additionally, the Horn of Africa Ground Water for Resilience Project (HOAGWRP) will see the construction of 400 boreholes to provide water to communities in the region.
Gachagua also addressed the region's climate change challenges, noting that the NEDI program incorporates resilience measures to mitigate its impact. He emphasized the need for local leaders' involvement to ensure these projects' success and sustainability.
He said their participation would ensure better feedback mechanisms, making the development initiatives more impactful for the communities involved.
