According to multiple reports, Iran launched ballistic missiles into Israel on Tuesday. Around 100 missiles were fired in what is believed to be the first wave of the attack. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had been anticipating a significant strike from Iran, as reported by Reuters and Axios’ Barak Ravid. Iran has long vowed retaliation against Israel for a series of assassinations targeting leaders of its proxy groups, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

“All Israeli civilians are in bomb shelters as rockets from Iran are fired at Israel,” the IDF said in statements on Tuesday. “Approx. 10 million civilians are the targets of Iranian projectiles.”

Another wave of attacks is anticipated, and both Israel and neighboring Arab states have closed their airspace, according to multiple reports. Israeli officials informed Axios’ Barak Ravid that the Israeli security cabinet is holding an emergency meeting in a bunker near Jerusalem.

At the time of the attack, multiple air raid sirens sounded across Israel. Earlier in the day, Hezbollah had launched numerous rockets at the country. While Israel generally intercepts drone and missile attacks using its Iron Dome defense system, it was not immediately clear whether any of the Iranian missiles had bypassed interception.
