The leadership of the National Assembly traveled to Naivasha, Nakuru County, on Sunday for the 2024 National Assembly Leadership Retreat, taking place from Monday to Wednesday. The retreat, themed “Re-invigorating Synergy in Leadership for Accelerated Discharge of the Mandate of the National Assembly,” builds on last year's focus of “Building Synergy in Leadership: Enhancing the Legislative Agenda in the National Assembly.”

According to a program released by the National Assembly Speaker's Office, the leadership will meet to discuss key legislative priorities and enhance collaboration within the Assembly's leadership. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula stated, “The retreat provides an opportunity for House leaders to outline a strategic direction for managing legislative business through the remainder of the Third Session and into the Fourth Session, which will run from November 5 to December 12, 2024.”

Wetang’ula highlighted that the retreat aims to produce vital outcomes, including strategies to tackle challenges faced during the Third Session and advance plans for processing bills and other legislative priorities. He emphasized that the meeting will also enable leaders to develop more effective oversight methods through committees and address procedural and structural issues affecting the House's functions.

In response to public concerns about energy challenges, such as rising costs and frequent blackouts, Wetang’ula has invited the Energy Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Energy, and the CEO of Kenya Power to discuss sector improvements and future needs to support manufacturing.

“We need bipartisan cooperation to prioritize essential legislation and create partnerships that benefit the public. Our focus will be on addressing issues like unemployment, the impact of the tax regime, and revenue-raising measures that affect the business climate,” the Speaker stated.

This year’s retreat will also feature a session with the Ministry of Energy on energy security and infrastructure. Additionally, Wetang’ula will host a National Assembly Speaker’s Round Table with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) on “Drivers of Competitiveness.”

The main goal of the retreat is to allow House leaders to reassess their roles in relation to the Assembly's performance, build relationships with peers, identify upcoming priorities, and discuss critical issues candidly.
