A student at Sironga Girls High School in Nyamira County sitting the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination on Tuesday collapsed after a Ministry of Education official beat her.

According to a police report, the candidate was taking the exam in class when Beatrice Kendi, a quality assurance officer, entered the room at about 9 a.m.

The student was chewing something Kendi suspected to be “unauthorised material.”

“She moved closer and slapped the student severally but did not recover any exhibit to effect,” read the police report.

After the ministry official left, the student remained restless in the class. As the exam was about to end at around 10 a.m., she collapsed.

Further, police said that the student was rushed to the school dispensary, attended to, and discharged “in fair state.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is probing the matter.
