Kenyan Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Dr. Korir SingOei has refuted claims that Kenyan security agents were involved in the alleged abduction of prominent Ugandan opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Besigye, reportedly abducted in Nairobi on November 16 during a book launch hosted by Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, was later handed over to Ugandan authorities.

He now faces charges of undermining national security and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition allegedly recovered in Nairobi.

Speaking on the Citizen TV show, Dr. SingOei clarified that Kenya has established protocols for visits by high-profile leaders, including transport and security arrangements.

He noted that Besigye frequently visits Kenya for personal engagements but stated that his recent visit was not communicated to Kenyan authorities. Consequently, local officials could not facilitate his trip or provide additional security.

Dr. SingOei emphasized that the Kenyan government was not involved in the abduction and highlighted that officials from the Interior Ministry had corroborated this position. He added that while the incident was regrettable, it did not reflect Kenya's longstanding reputation as a haven for many.

The Principal Secretary urged visiting government and opposition leaders to inform Kenyan authorities of their travel plans for better coordination and enhanced security measures. He explained that such notifications could prevent criminal elements from exploiting Kenya’s open environment for unlawful activities.

Dr. SingOei reassured the public of Kenya’s commitment to ensuring safety and hospitality for all visitors.
