Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has called on leaders to avoid politicizing health-related initiatives, particularly the Social Health Authority (SHA) registration process.
During the launch of a five-day free medical camp at Chepkemel Primary School, held ahead of the Chepsaita Cross Country event, Muthoni urged community leaders and elites to champion SHA registration.
She emphasized that SHA provides comprehensive health coverage, ensuring no Kenyan is turned away from medical care due to financial constraints.

“Let’s not let politics hinder progress in health matters. SHA is here to cover everything, and as community leaders, we must educate and encourage the public to register for their benefit,” she said.
Muthoni highlighted the vital role played by Community Health Promoters (CHPs), who have already visited over 22 million households. From these visits, 300,000 individuals diagnosed with diabetes were referred to health facilities for treatment.
She underscored the importance of CHPs in identifying and addressing health issues within communities, particularly among those unaware of their conditions.
Effective October 1, 2024, the SHA has faced public scrutiny over its efficiency. Some patients have reported challenges with the scheme, including failure to settle hospital bills.
The government has pledged to address these administrative hurdles and improve the program’s effectiveness.
