The family of Dismas Kogo, a security guard from Ngong, is grappling with heartbreak after his tragic death by suicide on January 1, 2025.
Dismas, who sustained severe injuries in a hyena attack five years ago, had been battling stress and frustration due to the lack of compensation from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The attack left Dismas with a deep leg wound and a missing finger, derailing his plans to join the military. He applied for compensation from KWS but faced repeated rejections.
In an emotional interview, Dismas revealed the weight of his burden as the eldest child in a single-parent household.
“I was sure I’d join the army, but now I can’t even work. My parents sold everything for my treatment. Instead of receiving the compensation to help my family, we’ve been left with nothing. This stress has made me question my purpose,” he said.
