A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday at Ebenezer SDA Church in Ramoya village, Homa Bay County, when a 35-year-old church elder was fatally stabbed during a service.
Francis Opiyo, a respected elder at the church, was attacked in front of the congregation shortly after delivering church reports. Witnesses say the assailant, also an elder, approached the altar, pulled out a knife concealed in a Bible, and stabbed Opiyo in the chest. The victim collapsed immediately.
According to Suba South Sub-County Police Commander Caxton Ndunda, the suspect accused Opiyo of having an affair with his wife, a fellow church member. Following the attack, the suspect fled but later surrendered to the local Assistant Chief. Authorities arrested him, and he is currently held at Magunga Police Station.
Opiyo was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. His body has been moved to St. Camillus Hospital Mortuary in Sori Town, Migori County.
Police have urged residents to resolve conflicts through legal means rather than resorting to violence. The shocking incident has left the church community in mourning, highlighting the need for peaceful conflict resolution.
