Renowned Kikuyu gospel artist Philip Kimani has turned down a Sh1 million cash reward offered by Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia, despite receiving overwhelming public support in an online poll initiated by the legislator.

The MP had launched the poll via Facebook, asking the public to choose between Kimani and fellow gospel singer Dr. Sarah K for a special recognition award. He stated the money was intended for a gospel musician who is born again, morally upright, scandal-free, and not driven by commercial interests.

“We aimed to honour a gospel artist who is truly born again, preaches righteousness, and leads a life free from scandal—someone who hasn’t commercialized their ministry or compromised their values,” said Kururia.

Kimani won the vote but graciously declined the money, saying the love and recognition from fans was reward enough. His response drew praise across social media, where many commended his humility and integrity.

Dr. Sarah K, the other nominee, supported Kimani’s decision and suggested the money be redirected to someone in genuine need. “The One Million should go to a deserving, needy person,” she stated.

The initiative follows similar philanthropic efforts by the MP, who previously supported public figures like Dada Sarah and comedian Henry Desagu during hard times. According to sources, the funds were raised in partnership with other leaders and business allies.

In his initial Facebook post, MP Kururia had tagged several high-profile individuals—including singer Samidoh, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a—signaling the importance of the award.

After the artists’ responses, Kururia conceded that the approach may have been misguided. “The category we chose was wrong. I agree, the One Million support should go to a truly deserving, needy person,” he wrote.

Public reactions were mixed but largely positive, with many urging the MP to direct the funds toward causes like education. “In your constituency, there are students struggling to stay in school. Use that money to sponsor ten of them—Sh100,000 each—and you’ll have changed lives,” one user commented.

Others praised Kimani’s values and faith. “You’re a true definition of real Christianity,” wrote one fan. “A role model to many,” said another.
