On Tuesday evening, a Grade Four student drowned while attempting to swim in a water pan in Rapedhi village in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County.
The 14-year-old youngster was with his brother when they decided to swim in the pan.
According to the area's assistant chief, Neto Akech, the youngsters attempted to cross from one side of the pan to the other while swimming, but as the boy reached the middle, he lost his balance and fell into the water.
His brother returned home to alert their father. Residents who hurried to the scene could only recover the body, which was then taken to the Manyatta Kobodo mortuary.

This incident happened barely a week after police launched an inquiry into the death of a 4-year-old boy whose body was discovered floating in an Isebania borehole.
According to Kuria West sub-county police chief Cleti Kimaiyo, a public member spotted the boy's body floating in the borehole.
The body was extracted from the borehole and transported to the Akidiva Hospital mortuary for preservation while family members were notified.
Mr Kimaiyo added that the deceased went missing on April 25, 2023, and they have yet to identify what happened before his death.
He said investigations into the incident had already commenced, and the deceased's remains had been preserved pending an autopsy.
