On May 3, 2023, Jane Marriott, the UK ambassador to Kenya, posted a message on her official Twitter account expressing her support for a free and open media in Kenya. Her message is strong and gives the nation assurances of the UK's continued support.

On #WorldPressFreedomDay, I took questions from @FareedKhimani and @CapitalFMKenya, after @EricLatiff yesterday - it is important that public figures subject themselves to questions and are accountable.

Jane Marriott urged all Kenyan public figures to be open to being questioned by the media and to take responsibility for the roles they play.

The United Nations General Assembly formally acknowledged the day in 1993, and it has been observed annually since then.

May 3 marks the annual observance of World Press Freedom Day, which commemorates the fundamental principles of press freedom and its significant role in the progress of democratic societies.

Press freedom is vital to democratic nations because it holds those in power accountable. It enables journalists and media outlets to report on issues without fear of censorship or retaliation, which is essential for promoting transparency and keeping the public informed about significant topics. Press freedom also makes information more accessible to citizens, facilitating their participation in political processes and public discourse.

However, press freedom is often threatened, and journalists face dangers in various parts of the world. Governments, politicians, and even powerful corporations may try to suppress or manipulate the media to maintain their interests. Therefore, celebrating World Press Freedom Day reminds us of the importance of protecting press freedom, promoting media literacy, and ensuring that journalists can work without fear of violence or intimidation.

Journalists and media outlets have faced threats, intimidation, and violence simply for doing their jobs.

This special day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges that journalists and media companies face globally and to advocate for greater respect for press freedom. A free press also promotes transparency, helps to make information more accessible to the public, and keeps citizens informed about important issues. It is essential to safeguarding democracy and protecting human rights.
