The government has announced plans to abolish the visa requirement for Republic of Comoros citizens holding valid travel documents travelling to Kenya by the end of 2023.

President William Ruto made the revelation during the 48th anniversary of the independence of the Union of Comoros.

“Kenya stands with Comoros as partners in progress, committed to deepening our collaboration for the benefit of our peoples. Together, we can harness our shared potential to create opportunities, foster innovation, and build sustainable economies that leave no one behind,” he said.

The declaration continued Kenya's policy towards African unity, which gained momentum under the presidency of the country's most recent president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenya has been a leading advocate for reducing trade barriers among African nations to facilitate the movement of commodities, services, and labour by integrating regional trading blocs.

As part of the initiatives to promote the movement of goods under preferential trading begun in January 2021, Kenya was one of the nations chosen to take part in the pilot phase of the AfCFTA Initiative on Guided Trade last year.
