The lighting system at one of the runways at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria has been stolen by thieves.

The authorities have not established when the system was stolen.

However, it is said airport staff were involved in carting away the lights just months after they were installed.

According to BBC, the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says an investigation is underway to arrest the criminals and recover the runway lights.

Local media stated that as a result, domestic carriers were required to utilise the international portion and take a taxi back to the appropriate terminal some 4 km away, which disrupted flights.

After years of banning takeoffs on that airport wing after dusk, the ground lights were erected in November.
