Trade Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria is now blaming the vandalism of the Nairobi Expressway during Wednesday’s anti-government protests on the illegal settlers on the East Africa Portland land.
Speaking on his tweeter in reaction to the violence witnessed at the Mlolongo Expressway toll station,
He said the destruction is because the government evicted squatters from the Portland property.
“The violence in Mlolongo yesterday was because we evicted squatters from East Africa Potlland. You can burn all you want, “tweeted Kuria.
The commerce cabinet secretary revealed his intentions to kill people he labelled squatters from the firm land last year.
He said it was tragic that after being brought to its knees, the cement business still owned a sizable portion of the land the settlers were unlawfully using.
“East African Portland Company will not turn out to be a center for land transactions, we have the plan to utilize the land in question by constructing the first Kenya cargo airport; a facility that will turn around the fortunes of this company.”
Later, authorities from the Ukambani region would criticise the new CS for his eviction words, in which he ordered that structures built by settlers be levelled.
On Wednesday, demonstrators blocked the main Mombasa Road. They vandalised the metal barriers separating the motorway in Mlolongo, forcing drivers to perform rapid U-turns on both sides and damaging several vehicles.
The rioting in Mlolongo was so severe that the authorities reported three fatalities.
Patrick Makau, a Mavoko politician, was arrested due to the commotion witnessed in Mlolongo yesterday.
He is presently detained at the Kiambu police station for his participation in the demonstrations from yesterday, which resulted in damage to a motorway portion.
