Lawyers representing Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza in her impeachment hearing at the Senate have sought to explain why charges against the county boss have no basis.
Elias Mutuma and Elisha Ongoya said the MCAs decided to impeach Mwangaza again when the Senate failed to confirm charges against her during the last impeachment in November 2023.
This is the third time Mwangaza is facing an impeachment hearing.
Mutuma said the team representing the county assembly in November 2023 when Mwangaza was at the Senate for the last impeachment predicted they would be back at the House.
“How could they predict during the last impeachment that we would be here and the prediction comes to pass?” he posed.

“Abraham Lincoln said the surest way to predict the future is to create it. They went and created this moment. They created another impeachment,” he added.
Mutuma claimed that one day after the Senate dismissed the charges, the MCAs gathered in Nairobi to create a new impeachment Motion “based on lies.”
“They are pathological lies. Lie that is not only untrue but a lie that is created and believed by the person who has created it,” he said.
“What Kenyans are being fed with are lies. Lies that were created when we were before the Senate defending the governor in 2023.”
He added that the MCAs get bitter when they are told they are lying to Kenyans.
“County assembly has created a lie. Told a lie, and repeated the lie so many times that it started to sound like the truth. When you at them in the eye and tell them it’s a lie, they get bitter,” Mutuma stated.
Ongoya said the county assembly has tried to remove Mwangaza from office five times though the matter has been before the Senate for the third time now.
“When we were here debating the last Motion, they said that if the Senate reinstates Mwangaza, they should know that they have six more times to impeach her,” he said.
Ongoya added that the MCAs did not need new grounds to impeach Mwangaza.
“They said they would do it six times so that they tell the people of Meru that they tried their best. We are here today as a matter of statistical count,” he stated.
He added that the impeachment has nothing to do with Mwangaza’s act or commission or omission to warrant her removal from office.
