Lionel Elika Fatupaito, Samoa's boxing coach, passed away at the Paris Olympics village after suffering a cardiac arrest, officials announced on Saturday. The 60-year-old's sudden death occurred on Friday, coinciding with the opening ceremony.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) expressed "heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues" of Fatupaito. According to the local prosecutor's office, emergency services attended to him, but he could not be saved. The cause of death was determined to be "natural causes."
The IBA released a statement praising Fatupaito's contributions to boxing: "Lionel's dedication and passion for the sport have left an indelible mark on the boxing community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with team Samoa and all those affected by this profound loss."
The Olympic boxing events in Paris began on Saturday.
