In his first official act as president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal named Ousmane Sonko, a fiery politician and strong supporter, as prime minister on Tuesday.

Ousmane Sonko, a figure widely admired by the youth, has been a vocal opponent of former President Macky Sall. However, a defamation conviction barred him from contesting the March 24 presidential election, a charge he vehemently denies.

Using the joint campaign slogan "Diomaye is Sonko," Sonko urged his followers to support Faye, his top lieutenant, who won the first round with more than 54% of the vote.

Faye took office on Tuesday.

After his appointment, Sonko said he would send Faye a comprehensive list of all suggested ministerial appointments for his approval.

"There will be no question of leaving him (Faye) alone to assume this heavy responsibility," Sonko replied.
