Heavy rains across the country have left residents counting losses, with properties worth millions destroyed.

Residents of Elite Court on Ole Dume Road in Nairobi's Kilimani were evacuated on Sunday morning after being trapped inside their homes due to flooding.

According to neighbors, the construction of a structure in the community blocked the flow of the Kirichwa Kubwa River, causing flooding in their homes.

For the fourth time this year, Kartasi Products Limited on Enterprise Road in Nairobi was devastated by floods, resulting in property damage and losses.

The administration blamed the recurring flooding and encroachment on the Ngong River. Some live along the river in Mukuru Kayaba, Lunga Lunga, and Soweto.

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Works Geoffrey Tirop identified encroachment as the principal cause of floods.

“The main challenge is encroachment. If you go along the river banks, you will see actually heavy encroachment on the riparian,” Engineer Tirop explained.

The flooding in the city may worsen, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which predicts more rainfall in April and May.
