The Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders has officially endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki as their representative for the Mt. Kenya East region. During a gathering on Wednesday attended by over 2,000 elders from Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties, the elders agreed to support Prof. Kindiki as their key link to the Kenya Kwanza government.

The elders highlighted Kindiki's close relationship with President William Ruto and praised his reliability, declaring him fit to serve as the region's political leader and a champion for development. "We, as Njuri Ncheke from both Meru and Tharaka, fully endorse Kithure Kindiki, who is working well with our President, William Ruto.

He is one of us, our own," one elder said. "Today, we appoint him as our kingpin, spokesman, and the connection between us in Mt. Kenya East and the President. What Njuri Ncheke says is final, and there will be no deviation from this decision."

The elders further emphasized that Mt. Kenya East has long supported Mt. Kenya West in political matters and now believes it is time for the favor to be returned. "For years, we've backed leaders from Mt. Kenya West—from Kenyatta, Moi, Kibaki to Uhuru. We had hoped they would support us this time by having one of our own as deputy president under Ruto," added another elder.

This endorsement comes amid a growing political divide in the region, with some factions backing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, while others support Kindiki. Recently, MPs from Mt. Kenya East also threw their support behind Kindiki as their key representative to the national executive, following a similar endorsement by the Mt. Kenya and Diaspora Parliamentary Leaders Forum.

The latest declaration, signed by 40 MPs from Mt. Kenya West and the diaspora, known as the 'Nyahururu Declaration,' brought the total number of legislators backing CS Kindiki to 69. These ongoing endorsements appear to be setting the stage for a potential political rivalry between Kindiki and DP Gachagua over control of Central region politics.
