The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has officially approved charges against five individuals for their alleged involvement in organizing, mobilizing, and funding the youth-led anti-government protests in June 2024.

In a letter dated September 26, 2024, addressed to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Amin Mohamed, the DPP confirmed sufficient evidence to prosecute the five closely associated with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The suspects are set to be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony under Section 393 of the Penal Code. Additionally, the DPP has instructed opening a separate investigation into possible financial crimes, including money laundering.

Members of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi (Embakasi Central) and James Mwangi Gakuya (Embakasi North), along with Gachagua's associates George Theuri, Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Pius G. Munene, are among those facing charges.

Mwangi faces additional charges for allegedly inciting others to commit an offense under Section 391 of the Penal Code and money laundering violations as per the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.

These charges represent a significant development in the ongoing legal action related to the June protests, highlighting the government's commitment to addressing financial and legal irregularities associated with the event.
