After Virgil van Dijk's late penalty ended a contentious encounter on Monday, the Netherlands defeated Greece 1-0 in Athens to put themselves back on track to qualify for Euro 2024.

After defeating the Dutch 2-1 on Friday, the Dutch are now ranked second in Group B behind already-qualified France. Despite having the same points as Greece, the Dutch have the advantage going head-to-head because they have won both at home and away.

On November 18, Van Dijk's team will host the Republic of Ireland before traveling to bottom-place Gibraltar three days later.

In Athens, the Dutchman Wout Weghorst had a first-half penalty saved, but Liverpool defender Van Dijk didn't make a similar error in the last seconds.

In a dramatic finish to the game, Van Dijk converted the penalty kick after Denzel Dumfries was fouled in the Greek penalty area.

Gus Poyet, the coach of Greece, was dismissed for insulting the referee as tempers erupted.
