Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United is being investigated for engaging in unlawful betting, the Premier League team announced on Wednesday.

For a rumored cost of Sh11 billion ($74 million), Tonali left AC Milan to join Newcastle in July—a record amount for an Italian player.

Soccer players in Italy are being investigated by law enforcement and sports organizations for using illicit betting systems.

"Newcastle United can confirm Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity," the club said.

"Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities. He and his family will continue to receive the club's full support."

As part of a settlement with the FIGC, Juventus's Nicolo Fagioli was banned for seven months on Tuesday for breaking the rules on match betting. Turin prosecutors are looking into him for allegedly placing bets on unlicensed websites.

Newcastle stated they could not provide any additional comments at this time due to the ongoing nature of the Tonali inquiry.
