Janeth Chepng’etich won the women’s 10,000 metres race in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday, bringing Kenya's gold medal haul at the African Games to six.
Chepngétich clocked 33:37.00 to win the 25-lap race ahead of Ethiopians Belew Kefale (33:38.37) and Amare Tekan Berhe (33:51.50), who came second and third, respectively.
Chepngétich sprinted in the last lap to overcome Kefale, who had dominated the race in the early stages of the 25-lap race.
Her win was Kenya’s sixth gold at the quadrennial competition, bringing the country’s medal tally to 24.
Earlier on Thursday, tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi defeated Egyptian Abdelaziz Lamir by straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in singles final for the African crown before settling for silver in the doubles.
