Kenyan athletics is in the spotlight as double world record holder Faith Kipyegon and rising star Beatrice Chebet receive nominations for the prestigious Track Athlete of the Year awards from World Athletics.
This recognition comes after a remarkable season for both athletes.
Kipyegon, the reigning Olympic champion in the women’s 1500m, made history by winning this title for the third consecutive time, a feat unmatched by any other female athlete. She demonstrated her versatility by securing a silver medal in the 5000m at the summer games and setting a new world record of 3:49.04 during the Paris Diamond League. Kipyegon capped off her season by winning her fifth Diamond League trophy with a time of 3:54.75 in Brussels.
Chebet also had an impressive season, making history as Kenya’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 10,000m. She followed this triumph with another gold in the 5000m and set a world record for the 10,000m at the Prefontaine Classic, finishing in 28:54.14. Additionally, she defended her World Cross Country title in March, further establishing herself as one of the sport’s elite athletes.
In the men’s category, Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is nominated after showcasing remarkable skill and resilience throughout the season. As the current world record holder for the mile, he is on track to challenge David Rudisha’s long-standing record of 1:40.91.
