The Ministry of Health has reported three new Mpox cases in the country, marking the first confirmed infections after a month-long break, and bringing the total number of cases to 17. Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa announced on Friday that the new cases were identified in Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nairobi counties.

The distribution of cases by county is as follows: Nakuru (3), Kajiado (2), Bungoma (2), Taita Taveta (1), Busia (1), Nairobi (2), Mombasa (2), Makueni (1), Kericho (1), Uasin Gishu (1), and Kilifi (1).

Dr. Barasa shared that 13 of the confirmed cases have fully recovered, while three individuals are still undergoing treatment. The number of Mpox-related deaths remains at one, a patient who initially recovered from Mpox but passed away on October 11, 2024.

“So far, eighty-three (83) contacts have been identified, with seventy-eight (78) completing the required 21-day follow-up. Of these contacts, three (3) have tested positive for Mpox, and two (2) remain under active follow-up,” stated Dr. Barasa.

In the past 24 hours, 15,068 travelers were screened at Points of Entry (POEs), bringing the total to 1,701,813 screened across 26 POEs.

Dr. Barasa also noted that the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) has received and tested 271 samples, with 17 confirmed positive, 250 negative, and 4 still under testing.

The Ministry urged citizens to stay alert, adhere to Mpox prevention guidelines, and avoid non-essential travel to regions with active Mpox transmission.
