According to a team source who spoke to AFP on Monday, Kylian Mbappe has taken over as France's captain instead of Hugo Lloris. Hugo Lloris left his position last year.

The 24-year-old forward for Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe, accepted the offer after negotiations with Didier Deschamps earlier.

Tottenham goalie Lloris retired from international competition after his team's defeat in the World Cup final a month ago.

Lloris, 36, served as the skipper for more than ten years.

Raphael Varane of Manchester United retired after the team's defeat to Argentina in December, and Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was elected vice-captain.

Mbappe, who has played for 66 different countries and helped Les Bleus win the 2018 World Cup, had been closely associated with the job for weeks. In the loss in the World Cup final, he scored a hat trick.

Marquinhos of Brazil is followed as vice-captain. In Sunday's loss to Rennes for PSG, former Monaco forward led the squad without the defender.

His first game as captain is a clash with the Netherlands in this Euro 2024 qualifier on Friday at the Stade de France.

Kylian Mbappe has been one of the most outstanding players in France's National team recently, especially in the World cup.

Mbappe Mbappe debuted in 2016 with Monaco and won the World Cup two years later with France. The forward experienced incredible success after joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, and he has since emerged as one of football's rising stars.

His performance against Argentina in the final in 2022 was a testament to his abilities, as he saved Les Bleus from defeat and forced a penalty shootout. He has already amassed incredible records, and the future is tremendously promising.

After last year's competition, Mbappe is only five goals short of breaking the record for most goals scored in a World Cup. Five players are ahead of him in the standings, and only Lionel Messi is expected to compete in the upcoming event.

He shares the record for the most goals scored in those stages with the Brazilian Ronaldo, with eight from the knockout rounds. He is also the only player with 12 goals at a World Cup before turning 24.

His hat trick was just the second in World Cup final history, and he became just the second player to score in back-to-back finals. He has set a new record with four goals scored in the combined 2018–2022 and 2022 World Cup finals.
