A source close to Paris Saint-Germain told AFP on Tuesday that Lionel Messi is "far more likely" to leave the club after the season than to agree to a new contract.

"The insider claimed that the situation had completely changed and that there was "no deal, no going yet" since PSG was less aggressive in seeking to renew (his contract). Leaving, however, is much more likely."

World Cup champion Messi joined in 2021 on a two-year deal that expires after this season. Messi will turn 36 in June.


After the teams were named on Sunday before PSG's 1-0 home loss to Lyon, several PSG supporters booed the Argentine's name.

Since being eliminated by Bayern Munich from the Champions League in the round of 16 last month, the fans of the club owned by Qatar are dissatisfied with the atmosphere around the team.

On the likelihood of Messi's contract being renewed, the source claimed that "the fans have completely transformed things."

Messi has scored 29 goals and 32 more assists in 67 outings for PSG across all competitions.


Two years after he left the team where he won four Champions League titles because Barcelona could not afford to extend his contract, Messi has been actively courted by Barcelona to return to Camp Nou.

Announcing last week that there had been "contact" with Messi, Barcelona vice president Rafael Yuste also said, "I would love it if he returned."

He has also reportedly been connected to a move to MLS, where Inter Miami is rumoured to be interested in signing him.
