On Wednesday evening in Germiston, South Africa, Ferdinand Omanyala, the Commonwealth Games 100m champion, won the second leg of the ASA Grand Prix.

Omanyala won in 10.05 seconds, ahead of compatriot Samuel Imeta, who finished second in 10.22 seconds, and Swaziland's Sibusiso Matsenjwa, who finished third in 10.33 seconds.

The African record holder improved on his 10.12 time from the first leg of the marathon last week but fell short of breaking 10 seconds.

"We're just getting deeper and deeper as we get closer to the season, and I'm hoping we'll get it (sub-10) sooner," Omanyala added.

The 27-year-old will now compete in a series of events culminating in the Kipkeino Classic on May 13, where he will attempt to defend his championship on home soil.

"My next race will be the Botswana Grand Prix, then I'll head to Atlanta before returning home for the Kipkeino Classic," he explained.
