According to the club, a soccer fan died on Saturday after falling from a stand during a match at River Plate's Mas Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The game between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia was called off after 26 minutes, and the players did not come back to the field. According to the club, medical teams, as well as police and security teams, responded "immediately" at the scene.

"During tonight's match against Defensa y Justicia, a fan fell from the Sivori Alta stand and died in the act," River Plate stated in a report posted to its website on Saturday.

"The grandstand at Sivori Alta, where the deceased had a season ticket, was 90% full." There was no intervention by other parties at the moment of the fall. It was also asserted that there were no acts of violence in or near the stand."

The club stated that the entire stadium was evacuated quickly after the incident and that security services and the Specialized Fiscal Unit for Mass Events, led by Dr Celsa Ramrez, have begun inspections and locked the stand for 24 hours to gather evidence.

River Plate has also declared a day of mourning on Sunday, with the club flag flying at half-staff, and has offered condolences to the supporter's family and loved ones.
