Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala has held the title since he finished first in the Kipkeino Classic Continental Tour Gold 100m in 9.84 seconds in May.

According to recent updates, Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain broke Omanyala's previous world record mark of 9.84 seconds at the World Athletics Tour in New York, clocking 9.83 seconds. In addition to setting the world record time, Hughes also shattered the 100-meter national record for the United Kingdom, which had previously been held by Linford Christie and set in the 1998 World Championships in Stuttgart.

Zharnel Hughes, a British sprinter who was born in The Valley, Anguilla, has focused on the 100- and 200-meter distances since 2015.

He has won medals in the European Games, World Athletics Championships, and the Commonwealth Games. Omanyala's previous world record time has been surpassed; thus, he will need to work harder to break it again at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21, 2023, before moving on to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in late August.
