According to authorities, a Greek football fan was stabbed to death on the outskirts of Athens on Monday night amid a scuffle between rival club supporters that injured at least six others.

According to authorities, the 22-year-old male was taken from the stadium in the suburbs to an Athens hospital, where he died.

The brawl erupted before the UEFA Champions League third-round encounter between hosts AEK Athens and Croatian team Dinamo Zagreb.

"A serious incident took place outside the Nea Filadelfeia stadium," Greek police said. "A young Greek man was stabbed to death, and six other people were injured and are in the hospital."

According to police, 83 persons were arrested due to the clash.

Violence has previously blighted several Greek football matches, and following another stabbing fatality last year, the government increased the maximum term for acts of fan violence from six months to five years.

Alkis Kampanos, 19, was killed in February 2022 in Thessaloniki, Greece, after a confrontation between fans of the city's rival clubs, Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK.

Seven defendants were found guilty of his murder and sentenced to life in prison last month. Five others were sentenced to more than 19 years in jail for cooperation.

In three years, it was the third death due to fan violence in Thessaloniki.
