Manchester United's  defender Raphael Varane will be out for a few weeks as a result of the injury he sustained against Nottingham Forest.

The 30-year-old Varane was taken off during the 3-2 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Club sources have downplayed reports that he could be out for up to six weeks, and they point out that the upcoming international break will cut down on the amount of games he misses.

His absence puts a greater spotlight on the future of Harry Maguire.

Although the England international turned down an offer from West Ham earlier this month, it has been speculated that he may yet go before Friday's transfer deadline.

With only Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof remaining as Erik ten Hag's senior central defenders, that seems less likely now.

It almost certainly means that Jonny Evans, a former defender for Manchester United, will convert his present short-term deal into a long-term one.
