Atletico Madrid's midfielder Thomas Lemar is set to undergo surgery following a rupture of his right Achilles tendon in Saturday's 3-0 defeat against Valencia, as confirmed by the LaLiga team. The 27-year-old, who had transferred to Atletico from AS Monaco in 2018, was carried off the field on a stretcher.

“Following tests carried out on the French player, the medical report from the club’s medical services indicates that he has a ruptured right Achilles tendon and will have to undergo surgery,” Atletico said in a statement on Sunday.

“All the best Thom, we wish you a speedy recovery.”

Diego Simeone's team currently holds the seventh position in LaLiga, having garnered seven points from four matches. They are scheduled to kick off their Champions League campaign against Lazio on Tuesday, followed by a home league match against Real Madrid on September 24th.
