Kenya Railways Corporation has received 50 freight wagons that will be used to transport cargo through the Madaraka Express.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said an additional 250 are expected in the country.

Murkomen added that Kenya must improve its infrastructure to remain competitive.

The new wagons are part of the government’s goal of enhancing rail services and infrastructure for competitiveness in response to market dynamics and evolving customer demands.

“The Ministry will, therefore, ensure we have the necessary human capital, operational assets and information systems for achieving these goals,” he said.

The CS stated that 20 of the wagons have power plugins, enabling refrigerated containers to move, creating new business opportunities for horticultural exports.

“Kenya’s rail transport network continues to register significant gains. MGR’s cargo volume, for instance, rose by 21 per cent from 787,000 tonnes in 2022 to 1,000,955 in 2023,” he noted.
