Roads, Transport and Public Works Cabinet Secretary(CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has announced the appointment of Muhumed Abdi Mohamed as the new chairman of the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC).

In a gazette notice, the KRC Board of Directors will now be chaired by Mohamed for three years.

He succeeds Pastor Awitta, who was appointed to the role in 2020.

“…the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, appoints— MUHUMED ABDI MOHAMED to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 10th February 2023. Gazette Notice No. 8799/2022 is revoked,” said Murkomen.

Awitta is one of a number of military personnel who were given prestigious government positions by the late president Uhuru Kenyatta.

He held various positions in the Kenya Defense Forces, Kenya Navy, and the Department of Defense Headquarters.

With the introduction of the Nairobi commuter rail, he is credited with revitalising the railway industry during his administration.
