According to data from data tracking websites, the Threads app, a rival to Twitter, has signed up more than 100 million users in less than five days.

Threads app, launched by Instagram, went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries late Wednesday.

However, the app is unavailable in Europe because parent company Meta is unsure how to navigate the European Union’s data privacy legislation.

Twitter is estimated to have 200 million active users, but since Elon Musk acquired the service last year and fired thousands of employees, there have been numerous technical issues.

In addition to alienating many users, Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has turned back banned right-wing accounts and added fees to previously free services.

Several competitors have developed, but most are specialised platforms that need more ability to expand to the requisite size to unseat Twitter.

Due to its connection to Instagram, which has more than a billion regular users, Threads is finding it simpler.

According to internet data provider Quiver Quantitative, the app reached 100 million users around 7:00 GMT on Monday.

Musk has threatened legal action against Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, alleging that the firm stole trade secrets and intellectual property.

Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg are at odds, and they recently challenged one another to a boxing match.

While ChatGPT took two months to hit the 100 million user mark and video-sharing app TikTok took nine months, Instagram took two and a half years to reach that mark after its 2010 launch.
