South Africa is set to host more than 200 policymakers, tourism experts, innovators, and changemakers from Africa in October to discuss the tourism sector.

Hosted by Airbnb in Johannesburg, participants will explore, innovate, and collaborate on building an inclusive and sustainable tourism industry on the continent.

Airbnb Middle East Africa Regional Lead Velma Corcoran said the summit is part of Airbnb’s commitment to build a more inclusive tourism economy and enable the government and private sectors to work together to address systemic barriers to entry and inequality.

“To support of the continued recovery and growth of the tourism industry, the Africa Travel Summit will bring together the leading thinkers from across the continent to discuss how we can leverage technology and innovation to empower more local families and their communities to benefit from African travel.”

“We look forward to facilitating important discussions amongst industry, policymakers and changemakers to collaboratively build a sustainable and inclusive tourism model that benefits everyone,” Corcoran said.

More than 20 speakers and panelists will present conversations on the role of tourism and technology in fostering equitable and sustainable economic empowerment and growth across the continent, moderated by She Leads Africa co-founder Afua Osei.

They include, among others, Juliette Langlais, Director of Public Policy and Campaigns for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Airbnb, and Bankole Oluwafemi, Founder of TechCabal.

Each speaker and participant is asked to contribute their personal experiences, academic results, and opinions on the best ways travel and technology may promote a more inclusive and sustainable future and aid in recovering post-pandemic tourism.
