The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has closed 44 health facilities in Nakuru County and partially closed another 16 for failing to meet prescribed criteria.

In a news conference following the operation, KMPDC CEO Dr David Kariuki revealed that they could assess around 260 facilities, of which the number stated above were determined to be non-compliant.

Doctor Kariuki reported that some hospitals were using quack doctors, had expired drugs on the shelves, and had lab samples that had gone bad.

He further stated that six quack physicians were detained during the operation and turned over to the police for processing before being charged in court.

KMPDC CEO said they are conducting this exercise to weed out facilities that may jeopardize the country's health standards by providing services that are not following the provisions of the law

He stated that the steps are part of the council's efforts to clean up the mess in the healthcare sector following allegations of unregistered establishments providing services.
