Police officers in Ngurubani town, Mwea-East Sub-county, Kirinyaga, have confiscated 240 cartons of suspected counterfeit alcohol and Kenya Revenue Stamps (KRA) stamps.
According to Kirinyaga police commander Rebuben Muli, the operation was carried out by police officers from Wang'uru police station after a member of the public tipped them off.
Two hundred sixty liters of ethanol in 13 jerricans, two pressing machines, a roll of KRA stickers, 5,956 bottles, and three bags of various bottles were recovered during the operation. The police chief has sent a strong warning to individuals who turn their homes into dangerous liquor dens.

"This business is taking place in a residential area. You cannot suspect, you cannot know an ordinary person, a police officer on patrol will not know and that is the reason I said we acted on our informer," Muli said.
According to Muli, the drinks are repackaged in recycled bottles of familiar brands and re-sealed for the market, and no one will be spared in the war on phony spirits.
He said that they are looking for the suspect who is at large and that if someone wants to do that type of business, there are correct procedures they have to follow. He added that they will sustain a crackdown against rogue traders until they have them out of Kirinyaga.
