Police and customs in Malaga, Spain, announced on Monday that they had seized 720 kilograms of cocaine from a ship that had arrived from Costa Rica at the end of September.

A video that the authorities released showed the haul—which weighs 1,587 pounds—hidden in a safe buried under heaps of metal scraps.

The interior ministry said that eight people had been taken into custody.

The end of August saw Spain seize a record-breaking nearly 9.5 tonnes of cocaine from Ecuador hidden in a banana container.

Spain serves as a gateway for drug smuggling into Europe due to its proximity to North Africa, a significant hashish supplier, and its strong ties with former colonies in Latin America, the world's primary cocaine-producing region.
