One suspect has been detained by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and 1,020 kg of copper cables that may have belonged to Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) in Nairobi have been found.

Francis Kaiga was apprehended on Tuesday during an operation at the Enterprise Road scrap metal yard in Shallian.

"1,020kg of copper cables believed to be property of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) were seized by detectives at a godown in Nairobi yesterday, in an operation where one suspect was arrested," the DCI said.

The DCI claims that inquiries are in progress to capture his accomplices who are still at large.

In November, KPLC declared that it had partnered with the DCI to address the increase in transformer vandalism incidents.

This resulted from the lighting company noticing a 46% rise in transformer destruction in the most recent fiscal year, impacting 242 transformers—a number that increased from 165 vandalized in 2022.

"We are confident that the partnership with the DCI will boost our capacity to proactively fight vandalism and other crimes through an intelligence-led approach," said KPLC.
