Police officers at Matuu Police Station in Machakos County are detaining a man accused of intentionally setting his house on fire while he and his wife were still inside.
He is reported to have secured the property from the inside with a padlock, buried the keys in his pocket, and then turned on a gas burner and a mattress.
While the couple was inside, a massive fire overtook the house, prompting the woman to raise the alarm.

According to village elder Peter Mutungi, neighbors responded quickly and burst into the house through the window, freeing the man and his wife.
Mutungi did, however, confirm that the couple's home was burned down in the process. Matuu Police Station OCS Peter Mugambi said the man is being questioned.
