A 20-year-old expectant student from Mawego National Polytechnic in Homa Bay County was tragically stabbed to death on Saturday in a suspected love triangle dispute.
Sheryl Awino, a first-year student pursuing a land surveying course, allegedly lost her life at the hands of her boyfriend, who is also a student at the same institution.
The suspect reportedly stabbed Sheryl in the abdomen using a kitchen knife, leading to the loss of both her life and that of her unborn child.
According to her father, John Odongo, Sheryl’s roommate called him on Saturday morning to inform him that his daughter had been admitted to Kendu Adventist Hospital in Rachuonyo North. Unfortunately, she later succumbed to the severe injuries sustained during the attack.
Investigations indicate that Sheryl was last seen in her hostel on Friday evening when her boyfriend visited. The two reportedly spent the night together without raising any suspicion. However, at around 5 a.m. on Saturday, neighbors heard a commotion from her room. Soon after, Sheryl was found with a deep stab wound and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered she was pregnant.
The bereaved family is now demanding justice, urging authorities to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large. Rachuonyo North Police Commander Lydia Parteyie confirmed that an active manhunt is underway to track him down.
In a separate incident in Ongogo Tir village, a 27-year-old man, Boas Owino, was fatally stabbed during a fight over a Form Four female student. The altercation involved a student from Asumbi Teachers Training College (TTC), who allegedly attacked Owino.
The suspect was immediately arrested and taken to Mbita Police Station.
