After armed men stormed a community in Samburu County, three individuals were shot and killed in the Lkek-Sabuki area.

One of the deceased was the local chief.

After a long search, two further National Police Reserve members were discovered to be alive, according to police.

The two NPRs and three other people are injured.

Attacks took place on Friday night, and Saturday morning as interior cabinet secretary Kithure Kindiki was supervising an ongoing operation to remove illegal firearms from civilian hands.

According to police and witnesses, the bandits broke into four villages in the same county on Friday night and stole an undetermined quantity of livestock.

A subsequent gun battle resulted in unknown numbers of security personnel and robbers hurting.

Witnesses reported that three officers, including two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops and a General Service Unit (GSU) officer, were seriously shot during a Friday night shootout with robbers in Pura, Samburu West.

Nairobi received an airlift of the injured.

Lesilampa, Lekirishati, Lempoko, and Lengoseg were among the villages attacked; cows were stolen, and the killing of one was in the crossfire.

To recapture the animals and neutralize the enemy, the multiagency troops comprised of members of the National Police Service and Kenya Defence Forces are following the criminals.

Kindiki reported that he spent Friday reviewing the deployment status and the advancement and difficulties facing the ongoing security operation in some areas of the Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu Counties.

He claimed that the extensive deployment of security personnel in the North Rift Region is permanent and will last longer than the current operation to drive out terrorist bands that have been robbing livestock in this region for nearly a century, inflicting immeasurable suffering on the local population.

The administration will see that this issue is no longer there and that long-term social and economic infrastructure improvements take place to integrate the economy, close developmental disparities, and guarantee shared prosperity for our nation.

He declared that to address the developmental issues in this area and other similarly situated ones of our nation, "we must first put an end to gun violence everywhere."

Naisula Lesuuda, a Samburu West MP, denounced the assault and wished the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.

She objected to the local shooters' continued attacks, stating they hurt people's lives negatively.

"It is sad that we have officers who are hurt. The most recent occurrence occurred 17 kilometres outside of Maralal town. Where are we looking right now? She struck a stance.

"I only provided an update on the situation yesterday; the Samburu West population is still under terrorism by bandits operating with impunity. That the military and GSU unit on the ground experienced it this evening is sad. Speedy recovery to all who were hurt, she tweeted.

"The family of Lelesara has now experienced two catastrophic losses in a very brief period. It is all taking place roughly 20 kilometres from Maralal County Headquarters. Seventeen kilometres from Maralal, the bandits feed and water their livestock.

Since then, the operation has recovered up to 23 guns and several bullets, mainly in Samburu.

Kindiki imposed a dusk–dawn curfew in banditry-prone areas because he deemed them disturbed and dangerous.

On February 14, 2023, the 30-day curfew went into effect, but it appears it is not stopping the attacks.

According to Kindiki, some areas in the following counties are affected: Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu.
