Mombasa police are looking into how a lady gave birth to a son and then got a deceased newborn four days later.

At Portriez Hospital, Mercy Masambaga gave birth to a boy on February 26. The newborn was taken to the Coast General and Referral Hospital with his father, Julius Kimeli, the following day after the medical professionals realized the baby was underweight and needed specialized treatment.

The family claims that on March 1, they received a newborn daughter. They were told their baby had passed away on February 27 and that the body was in the hospital mortuary after they pressed for more information.

Masambaga said to the media that, "Waliniletea mtoto msichana nikawaambia mtoto wangu ni wa kiume.

"Walianza kusema mtoto wangu alifariki tarehe 27 niliambiwa niende nikanunue pampers, nikawaambia tarehe 27. Itakuwaje wakaniambia we nenda ukae alafu wakakawia zaidi ya saa moja ndio wanasema alikufa?"

The following day, Kimeli went to the mortuary to check his worries and refuted claims that the dead infant was theirs.

Nilikua Portriez ambapo niliuliza na wakasema ni yuko underweight pekee yake? "Kama kweli mtoto alikuwa ni mgonjwa mbona hawakuniambia?" Kimeli asked.

The couple called the police, now in charge of the investigation, to figure out what happened.

Iqbal Khandwalla, CEO of Coast General Hospital, has since denied the family's allegations, claiming that he knows the situation. The DNA samples were taken on Thursday while investigations continue.
