Hong Kong officials are now detaining a Kenyan woman for smuggling 1 kilogram of a narcotic substance suspected of cocaine into the Chinese city.

According to Hong Kong police, the cocaine stashed inside her body was housed in 67 pellets with an estimated street value of HK$900,000 (about. Ksh.15.4 million).

The 35-year-old woman believed to have been acting was apprehended on April 9 at Hong Kong International Airport on her way from Nairobi through Addis Abeba.

Customs agents chose the woman for scrutiny before transporting her to a nearby hospital for assessment.

The woman allegedly voided the suspected drugs while waiting to be assessed. She was promptly arrested.

"As of April 10, the arrested woman had excreted 67 pellets of suspected cocaine weighing approximately 1 kg in total," the Customs Excise Department of Hong Kong stated.

On April 11, she was charged with one count of trafficking a hazardous substance into Hong Kong before the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts.

"The maximum penalty upon conviction is a HK$5 million (approximately Ksh.85 million) fine and life imprisonment," according to the Hong Kong Customs Bureau.
