On Tuesday night, tragedy struck Salama and Juhudi villages in Lamu after fighters thought to be from the al-Shabaab group stormed a camp and set houses on fire, killing one person.

At around three in the morning, the militia attacked a makeshift camp at Juhudi Primary School. More than 500 people called the camp home after seeking refuge two weeks ago after an earlier attack on their hamlet.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers were fought off for more than 30 minutes by national police reservists and other security officers stationed in the vicinity, forcing the militia to flee.

This attack initially targeted Salama village and was the second in less than three weeks.

Five men died in that incident, including a talented third-year high school student who had come home for a midterm break, and 11 residences were set on fire.
