A Kerugoya Police station officer in Kirinyaga County was on Wednesday found hanging from the roof of his rented house in Kerugoya town.

The deceased’s caretaker, Ann Wanjiru, said that she had gone to check up on him after he said that he had been missing since Monday.

Wanjiru claimed that after unsuccessful attempts to enter the door, she used an instrument to peer through the window and found a body hanging from the roof.

"I tried to open it in vain as the door was locked from inside. I was shocked after seeing the body I immediately called the authorities," Wanjiru said.

"We wonder why the officer decided to end his life and we think they are being paid well by the government."

Kamukunji Assistant Chief Julius Ngari said that the deceased's colleagues had been looking for him after he was a no-show at the police station.

"His colleagues had been looking for him for the last two months, little did they know he had rented here two kilometers away from the police station," Ngari said.

Further, he has called on residents to always check up on one another to tame the spike in the number of suicides in the country.

"Some cases are linked to mental illness caused by the breakdown in socio-economic safeguards, and we have to talk to each other," he said.

The deceased's body has been taken to Kerugoya hospital mortuary.
