Several cases of examination malpractice have surfaced across multiple counties as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams continue.

On Tuesday, November 12, officials uncovered various exam breaches in different schools. In Baringo County, a police officer stationed at St. Mary’s Secondary School observed a candidate behaving suspiciously during the Christian Religious Education (CRE) Paper 1. Police Constable Samuel Nyamawi from Salawa Police Post discovered the student hiding a Nokia C200 phone between his thighs. After some resistance, the officer confiscated the phone and found copies of the CRE Paper 313/1 questions and answers shared via WhatsApp. The candidate was subsequently arrested and taken to Salawa Police Post for further questioning.

In Garissa County, an invigilator at Ihya High School intercepted another case of malpractice during the Islamic Religious Education Paper 1. The candidate, found with a Samsung phone, had the device confiscated and handed over to Dadaab’s Deputy Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) for investigation.

Later that day, during a biology exam at Gedi Secondary School, officials, acting on intelligence, seized another student’s phone. The devices are under examination to assess the extent of the malpractice.

In a separate incident in Nandi County, a potential leak of the CRE Paper 1 was discovered circulating on social media. Authorities found that a photo of the exam paper from Kamimei Mixed Secondary School was being shared online. The Nandi County Commissioner, County Police Commander, Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officials, and security personnel quickly confirmed the authenticity of the leaked paper. As a result, four individuals were arrested: the school's Centre Manager, Hudson Kavulundi; Supervisor Jacob Kimutai; and invigilators Kingston Kavita and Tom Ominde. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are set to face charges in Kapsabet court for their involvement in the exam leak.
