Pritty Vishi's mother shared a heartbreaking account of the severe mistreatment she endured from her employer in Saudi Arabia for over a year before she made the courageous decision to escape which they call "Kukemboi".
Pritty Vishy's mother recounted her journey to the Gulf over four years ago, and upon arriving at her first employer's residence, she found herself in a difficult situation due to the harsh treatment she received.
Despite the many available rooms in her place of work, her boss insisted that she slept on the balcony for one year and seven months. Even when she expressed her illness, her pleas were not taken seriously, and she was expected to carry on with her duties as usual.
"My boss made me sleep on a dusty balcony for the one year seven months," she said.
Adding to her ordeal, she had to contend with the employer's ill-mannered children, who not only physically abused her but also subjected her to verbal insults. Shockingly, when she attempted to address or stop this behavior, she would face reprimand from her boss.
Taking matters into her own hands, she eventually fled from that household after receiving advice from other girls who suggested that she could live independently and find day jobs. While it remained a struggle, as she had to manage rent and other expenses, it was a significant improvement from the hardship of sleeping on the balcony.
After reaching an agreement with someone for a job opportunity back in Kenya, she made the decision to return. Unfortunately, at the last minute, she was denied the position solely because of her nationality – being Kenyan. It was a disheartening revelation that Saudi Arabians have a perception that Kenyans, while hardworking, can be challenging to work with due to their strong-willed nature.
Having spent nearly five years in Saudi Arabia, she concluded it was time to reunite with her children in Kenya. She successfully returned about a month ago, and she expresses her gratitude to God for her safety.
